January 20 has come and gone and we have a new president. We Americans gathered in a small restaurant in Mbabane (pictured above), cheered together and watched the inauguration which was all perfect timing as it was after work for us. Despite words of aid to developing countries sounding like music to our ears, we awoke the next day to newspaper headlines commenting that Obama is asking for democracy in Swaziland; no one seems too pleased about it. Obama suddenly became not as popular as he once was.
In other exciting events, over the past week it has rained more than I ever expected. We have played Monopoly South African style. We have watched movies; the highlight is borrowing a projector from work to show it on the big screen (our white wall). And we even had a cooking night where we grabbed ingredients out of a grab bag and then had to use them in our dish that night. There is no lack of creativity among my small but talented group of friends. Especially when it comes to cake baking, as you will see here when our friend Dan created this lion for his son’s first birthday last week!
