My friend Bob, who I have known since our days at UVa, came to Swaziland. We spent a year living on the same island of Kyushu in Japan more than 10 years ago. He came back to the states to pursue a writing career in DC, I headed off to medical school, and we slowly lost touch with each other. Until a year ago. I learned that he was at the international AIDS conference in Cape Town! He now works as the media director of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), and was heading my way after working on a story in Lesotho...check it out on 20-20 on Friday, December 17th.
In anycase, we had a full Swazi weekend, hitting my favorite park Malalocha, finding a native dance competition in Mlilwane, dining at Swazi Candles of course, and enjoying the usual ex-pat gatherings. We even found time for a bit of work; we headed off to camp training for all the counselors of the upcoming Camp Sivevane, jointly sponsored by Baylor, EGPAF and Young Heroes. Bob promptly won an amazing camper award, after 15 minutes. In anycase, he has joined the ranks of those lucky enough to be able to experience firsthand the magic of Swaziland.
