Fish River Canyon, Namibia

I just returned from a week in the Fish River Canyon, Namibia. This is apparently the second biggest canyon in the world (not sure what that means), and I hiked all 85km of it with a group of 4 hikers, a backpack and a sleeping bag. The season for hiking is only the winter months, May through September, when there is still some water left in the Fish River for drinking...(after purification of course). And the winter weather is quite comfortable, with no need for a tent at all! After a steep descent we followed the river, stopping at a hot springs (my favorite part!) and eventually crossing the river multiple times as we made our way to the final destination...a hot springs resort! 4 nights and 5 full days of hiking, but surrounded by spectacular scenery and no other hikers the entire time. Waking up to 5 star scenery, and going to sleep under blankets of stars. What a fantastic vacation!
